Preventing face-to-face violence

Already attended by over 20,000 people*, this is the bench-mark course for powerful non-physical techniques for handling aggression and violence safely.

  • * NHS Trusts
  • * Local Authorities
  • * Social Services
  • * Leading High Street Stores
  • * Leading Bus Companies

Course Aims

Dealing with aggressive people is never much fun, and it’s especially difficult if you don’t understand aggression or know what you should do when confronted with it. In fact there are different types of aggression, each caused by different triggers. With instruction they are easy to spot and often quite straightforward to resolve.

This course aims to make you feel much happier and more confident about your safety by covering the following:

  • Effective and empowering approaches based on established psychological theory, applicable to your specific work situation
  • A clear way of conceptualising aggressive incidents – you will know the different types of incident and what causes them
  • You will have a repertoire of techniques for handling aggressive situations using powerful, non-physical methods
  • You will feel you know all about aggression and violence, and how to prevent and deal with it in your own situation
  • You will notice that your new knowledge has a pay-off in dealing with all manner of situations, whether aggressive or not

The course deals thoroughly and practically with real life aggressive situations relevant to where you yourself work

  • Someone who is angry with you may be aggressive; but how is that different from someone who is robbing you? How do you need to respond differently?
  • Often, people who become angry get worse in spite of our best efforts. What’s going on? What should you do?
  • Recreational aggression. Did you know that many people are aggressive to entertain themselves? They are, and you will probably have come across some of them. There is an answer to their aggression.
  • How can you spot people who are going to cause trouble even before they have spoken? You probably can do, but how do you do it? Does it become a self-fulfilling prophecy?
  • The Frank C phenomenon. In the unit for aggressive prisoners that Frank C worked in, you could reckon to be assaulted up to 5 times per year. Frank worked there for 20 years without ever being assaulted, doing his job well and assertively. What did Frank have that protected him? (And you can have it wherever you work.)
  • In one situation, two policemen were confronted by two aggressive individuals. One policeman ran away, the other didn’t. Which did right? What would you want to know before answering that question?
  • "One of the most powerful interventions you can make is to have certain policies displayed where people can see them." Why and when is this true?
  • "We reassure everyone who has a problem, whether big or small. It really works." Is this likely to be true? (The answer is Yes, but why?)
  • In a heated situation you must always keep calm? Right? (No, wrong; often enough ‘keeping calm’ is tantamount to pouring petrol on the flames. But what should you do instead?)
  • "Our problem is that we have to deal with people who are already wound up!" Of course; that is the point of this course – it teaches you how to do it.
  • "Saying the right words isn’t even half the battle." Why not? What is the bigger part of the battle then?
  • Someone squaring up to you can be very frightening, especially because of the way they look at you. How should you react when someone does that?
  • "Habitually aggressive people may have a body buffer zone up to three times as large as non-aggressive people." It’s a verified research finding, but what does it say about what you should do?
  • Vince was infuriated that his pizza was delivered 90 minutes later than the pizza shop said it would be, yet ended up giving the delivery person a tip. What technique did the delivery person use to get that result? (Note: there are powerful verbal techniques available for different problem situations; we will cover them for you on the course.)
  • If all else fails. No matter how bad things are, there is always a best option. How to make the right choice from a menu of options.
  • Prevention is better than cure: Risk Assessment. After the event the risk is obvious. It needs to be just as obvious before the event. Knowing the three danger factors.
  • How to get good at techniques you hope rarely to use!

What the course will do for you

  • You will know about aggression: the different types, how it comes about and what can be done to resolve it. It will make sense both in your professional and personal life.
  • You will have new and more informed eyes with which to view an aggressive episode.
  • You will know how your ‘attitudes’ effect other people; how they can ‘sense’ them without your knowing.
  • You will know about body language. How you can modify your own to effect others, and how you can respond to others’ with your own.
  • You will have powerful, non-physical techniques to manage difficult situations.
  • You will feel – and be – safer in potentially aggressive situations.
  • You will more clearly understand the unpredictable: you will know why some people ‘always seem to get into trouble’ while others are the reverse.
  • You will have increased confidence in hostile situations.
  • You will know how to judge risk; and how to reduce it.
  • You will be equipped to more readily and clearly explain how you have resolved situations.
  • You will have a very good workbook to refer to.
